My sister

Out of 470,000 innocent people that have died in Syria my four year old sister is now one of them. Her minuscule body lays on the ground. Still, silent and stationary…

Her mahogany brown hair lays perfectly on her shoulders. She looks as if she is tranquil and peaceful as if nothing had happened, as if she were quietly sleeping. Thick, dark, deep red blood covers her small, innocent face. Powder white dust from fallen buildings cover her small hands and knees.

I hold her in my arms, her skin cold and blue. Tears fill my palm as I glance once again at the lifeless body I question myself over and over. Was there something I could have done? It seems as if my heart has stopped beating and I am slowly being swallowed by the earth beneath me. My hands begin to shake and my legs start to quiver. I have failed, not just her but my family. I was her older brother. I was the one that had to protect her, pray for her…save her but this time I had miserably failed.

I place my forehead onto hers. Memories come flashing back to me as if I were reading a book. I remember her faultless, fragile smile, her long brown hair that blew around in the wind as her green eyes look up at the sky, but if I knew that would be the last look that she would ever give me I would have cherished that moment, told her I loved her and that she was a blessing…if I were able, I would have stayed in that moment just that little bit longer.

5000 people die in syria every month due to mass bombings. The bombs seem as if they are hungry predators ready to attack… as if we were the prey. Yet these, “predators” don’t grow tired or weak. It seems as if they are never truly satisfied so they keep coming back for more innocent lives. These ruthless animals attack day and night. They murder adults, children and infants. Yet unlike wild predators these bombs don’t kill for survival, these bombs kill for no reason, no reason at all.  At night I hear these “predators” growl… and it never goes away.
