At first it was nothing but a grey cloud of discomfort and despair hovering over me… I didn’t understand how everyone was keeping it together… They were all like perfectly aligned domino’s, finding the white specks of light, faith and hope between the black darkness of misery. They all wanted to break down, I just know it! But they know better. They know that if one of us falls we all do. No longer aligned… No longer put together, but instead a mess that was not easily packed, a mess that was not easily collected, a mess that was not so easy to fix… So instead of being true, we had to be strong.

Father was given his uniform made up of 7% nylon, 9% cotton, 42% discouragement. Oh, and how could I have almost forgotten that extra 44% of such low agonizing spirit. It was then time for them to prepare his hair cut, the memories of scruffing each other’s hair and laughing whilst running around the house whilst mother was cooking, all gone within minutes.

We stood and simply watched him walk away for what seemed like the last time. Everything felt like nothing… I mean it’s not like he was a stranger. He was our own father, OUR father!

Going to battle, it’s not like he was one of the neighbours or one of our fellow townsmen. So why was everyone acting like this was ok? I mean, I used to jokingly have the casual thought that I was the only sane one in this family, but I was never being serious.

At the time I was still trying to process through my mind why the hell they would let him go, the man paying him didn’t even give him the proper helmet and gear he needed. All that was given to him was a crappy old leather vest and a shield, HE COULDN’T EVEN SEE THROUGH HIS HELMET PROPERLY! It might as well have been a blinded mask. Heck, his walk down there wasn’t a stroll in the park, it was practically suicide!

Mother asked why father was looking around so much and reassured him that he could always come back home, but of course he stood his ground and held his pride and replied with,

“I’m not going back hunny, it’s just because I can’t help but think not everyone around us will last until the end.” I understand he’s doing this to help him and mother’s so called “income” but isn’t he in a way leaving her out for dead. What if he dies, mother is left to look after seven children on her own. She won’t be able to cope, none of us will.

Some say I’m being pessimistic, but the truth of the matter is everyone else is just filled with optimism and false hope.

All I heard was a gunfire. Then dad’s scream. Mother then collapsed and had a heart attack.

He’s not breathing and dead, she’s not breathing and dead.

Were dead too. Yet still living in this hellhole
